Cognitive: Understanding of the past and present distribution of plant and animal and of the distribution of their communities.

Affective: Raising awareness for the biodiversity conservation, through the understanding of the factors influencing the distribution of the organisms, including human activities.

Skills: Ability for fieldwork. Recognition of different habitat types. Familiarization with the use of tools for the recognition of the different habitat types of Directive 92/43/EC. Recognition of organisms charaterizing different habitats.

Teaching Methods:

Written examination, paper, report on fieldwork

Course Contents:

Ecological biogeography: abiotic – biotic factors and biomes. Historical biogeography. Speciation. Dispersal of the organisms. Migrations. Distribution patterns – endemism – Terrestrial and marine biogeographical regions. Island biogeography. Biogeography and biodiversity. Influence of human activities on the distribution of the organisms.

Υπαίθριες ασκήσεις:

A four days lasting fieldwork aiming to the understanding of the distribution of the organisms and habitat types in relation to environmental changes. Observation of the horizontal distribution of habitats and adaptations of organisms to environmental changes (marine habitats, coasts, salt marshes and meadows, water courses and riparian forests). The different organisms along an altitudinal-climatic gradient (from the sclerophyllous scrubs to the deciduous forests and the alpine and subalpine formations).
