Laboratory of Animal Physiology
The study of various physiological functions in animals (D-L 389/8-6-76, Official Government Gazette 140/9-6-76, issue Α’).
The scientific staff of the laboratory covers the teaching activities of the School of Biology, that deal with the educational process of students in Animal Physiology. The basic courses of Animal Physiology I and II are concerned with such topics, as mechanisms governing the physiological function of animals in the cellular, organic and systematic levels and their interplay in order to achieve homeostasis. The students learn to handle oscilloscopes, force transducers and spectrophotometers and how to acquire and analyze bio electrical signals. They also get accustomed to the principles and methods of investigating the electrical and mechanical properties of excitable cells and tissues, as well as with enzymatic biochemical assays. The comparative study of structural and functional differentiation in cellular and physiological systems of various animal species is also taught (Comparative and Environmental Animal Physiology), in order to comprehend the ability and physiological properties of animals to adapt in various environmental conditions. During this course, students learn to operate instruments that measure biochemical parameters and become familiar with neurophysiological and cytological methods. Finally they get accustomed to use tools for information acquisition and learn to present current hot issues, involving relevant topics of Comparative and Environmental Animal Physiology.

Past and current research activity of scientific staff has resulted in more than 250 published papers in SCI journals.
Financed Research Programs
The scientific staff of the laboratory of Animal Physiology has been financed by a number of research programs (exceeding 50) deriving from national (GSRT, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Education), and European resources (5th, 6thEuropean Frame Work) and pharmaceutical companies.
