RIVER AND LAKE WATER QUALITY
Cognitive: Knowledge of the fundamental structure and function of rivers and lakes focusing on the hydromorphological, chemical and biological elements required by the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) for the evaluation and monitoring of the ecological status of freshwaters.
Affective: Awareness on protection and management of freshwater ecosystems.
Skills: Use of field polymeters, realise field sampling, perform species identification of phytoplankton, zooplankton and macroinvertebrate organisms, use of biotic indices, specialised software (for statistical analyses). Using bibliography, analysing, writing and presenting relative subjects (access to the electronic library of AUTH), working individually or in groups.
ODL package, laboratory and field work.
1. Physical characteristics (light, temperature, water movement, etc.)
2. Chemical characteristics (O2, CO2, ions + pH, nutrients + sulphur + conductivity, TDS, TSS, salinity)
3. Organisms and sampling methods (benthos + plankton + nekton + macrophytes)
4. Food webs - Productivity
5. Pollution and studies of special cases
6. Management Legislation - Restoration
1. Determination of nutrients (D. Bobori), 2. Phytoplankton (Μ. Moustaka), 3. Zooplankton (Ε. Michaloudi), 4. Macroinvertebrates (Μ. Lazaridou, Ε. Michaloudi, PhD and Master students), 5. Biological Indices (Μ. Lazaridou), 6. Statistical analyses (Μ. Lazaridou), 7. Written assignments concerning the ecological status of river and lake ecosystems (Μ. Lazaridou, Μ. Moustaka, D. Bobori, Ε. Michaloudi).
Sampling for benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish in river ecosystems, recording of hydromorphological, physical and chemical characteristics – pressure assessment (Μ. Lazaridou, D. Bobori, PhD and Master students).
The taught material can be found on-line, as part of the Educational Package BLACKBOARD at https://blackboard.lib.auth.gr. Select "English (US)" from the right side of the screen and then "Course Catalog". At the next screen select "Preview" from the right side. In the "Search for Course:" field give "water quality". The course "Water quality of running water (05U005)" should appear as the only result. Click on it to get the taught material. From the menu on the right, choose "Course Documents" and then the Course reader.
References are given in each chapter
Performing specific assignments, practising technical or laboratory skills, writing papers, reading books and papers.
Written examination, oral presentation, test, writing essays, report on fieldwork, continuous self-assessment.
