The School of Biology of the University of Thessaloniki operated first in 1973-1974 after the split of the former School of Natural Sciences into the Schools of Biology and Geology. Since then it has undergone rapid growth. More than 1,300 students have graduated . Currently, the teaching and research staff number 62, the technical and administrative 29, the graduate students 72 and undergraduate students approximately 600.

The departments

The School of Biology consists of four Departments:

1) Department of Botany which consists of two laboratories: General Botany and Systematic Botany and Phytogeography.
2) Department of Genetics, Development and Molecular Biology which consists of three laboratories: General Biology, Developmental Biology and Microbiology.
3) Department of Zoology which consists of three laboratories: Zoology, Animal Physiology and Ichthyology.
4) Department of Ecology which consists of the laboratory of Ecology.

Basic Science Courses, including practicals are conducted in Lecture Halls and laboratories within the Campus area.

The degrees

The School of Biology offers three degrees: 

a) a Bachelor's degree in Biology (B.Sc.) to all those who have successfully attended both core and optional courses and have attained the minimum of 145 credits required.

b) a doctoral degree in Biology (Ph.D.) to all those who have successfully completed their studies (courses and research work) after a minimum time -span of three years.

c) a Master's degree in Biology (M.Sc.). There are currently three available M.Sc.:
     (1) Applied Genetics and Biotechnology,
     (2) Hydrobiology and Aquaculture,
     (3) Environmental Biology.
