Cognitive: Acquisition of basic knowledge on the culture of aquatic organisms with economical interest.
 
Affective: Awareness of the need to develop aquaculture in relation to the problems of fisheries and their impact on the environment.
 
Skills: Ability to select species suitable to be cultivated successfully in a variety of environments, depending on the prevailing conditions.

 

Teaching Methods: 

Lectures, practical training (visits in aquaculture units)

Course Contents: 

Introduction to Αquaculture: general issues, types and systems of aquaculture, required physical conditions, environmental effects and protection measures, water quality. Culture of algae, Atremia, sponges, mollusks, crustaceans, and fishes. Principles of genetic improvement. Reproductive and feeding physiology of cultured fishes.  

Laboratory Exercises: 

Developmental stages and identification of hatching characteristics of Artemia

Υπαίθριες ασκήσεις: 

Four-days educational visit in the Aquaculture department of the Hellenic Center of Marine Research (HCMR) in Crete.
